Mets In The News Today

Light News Day. Everything still revolves around one thing, Kyle Tucker deciding whether he wants Citi Field or a lifetime supply of poutine.
- Mets went bigger on Tucker, reportedly up to 4 years. The pitch is still classic Cohen math: insane annual value, fewer years, less “this deal will haunt me in 2033” energy.
- $50M AAV smoke keeps getting louder. If that number holds, it’s basically “take the bag now, hit free agency again at 32, do it twice.”
- Toronto’s counter is length. Reports have the Jays willing to go long (think: 10-year neighborhood), while the Mets keep selling “short-term nuclear.”
- Stearns addressed the fan mood. Translation: they hear the groans, they still believe in the plan, and they’re betting the young pitching pipeline turns into real MLB innings soon.
- Calendar check. Spring training is close enough to taste. Pitchers and catchers are expected to report February 11, so the front office clock is basically blinking red.
A Trip Around Major League Baseball
- Ranger Suárez to Boston (5 years, $130M). Another frontline starter leaves the NL and immediately becomes a problem you only see in October.
- Alex Bregman to the Cubs is official. Five years, $175M, no opt-outs, full no-trade clause. That’s a “I live here now” contract.
- Nolan Arenado to the Diamondbacks. Arizona just added the glove and the name, then crossed their fingers for the bat to wake up.
- Yankees grabbed LHP Ryan Weathers from Miami. Four-prospect haul for the Marlins, and the Yankees keep doing that thing where they collect arms like they’re stocking a bunker.
NL East News & Notes

Braves
- Vidal Bruján got claimed off waivers by Minnesota. Depth chess, nothing sexy.
Phillies
- Suárez exits the building to Boston, rotation takes the hit.
- Phillies added bullpen depth: RHP Chase Shugart from the Pirates.
Marlins
- Weathers trade continues Miami’s tradition of treating “starting pitching” like a pop-up clearance rack.
Nationals
- Nationals are out with MASN and moving broadcasts into an MLB partnership setup. Weird era, new TV world.
Mets History Today
- Tom Robson was born on January 15, 1946. Hitting coach from the late 90s/2000 era who had guys believing they could actually hit good pitching.
- Robson’s “The Hitting Edge” era. John Olerud, Edgardo Alfonzo, Benny Agbayani all credited him. That whole stretch had a real “professional at-bat” vibe.
- Luis Alvarado birthday nod. Utility infielder with a Mets cameo that was basically a blink, but it still counts.
- Mike Marshall birthday nod. Veteran reliever who gave the 1981 Mets a solid season in the middle of an offense that refused to cooperate.
- Non-Mets, still New York. “Miracle on the Hudson” happened on this date in 2009, which still feels fake every time you remember it.
Stats You Should Know
- If Tucker lands here, it’s not vibes. FanGraphs has his 2025 line at .266/.377/.464, 136 wRC+, 4.5 WAR. That’s a star, even if you wanted more fireworks.
- Defense was fine, not frightening. Mets finished +25 DRS in 2025, which is “middle of the pack with a pulse.” The jump from “fine” to “October-proof” usually lives right there.
