Mets In The News Today

- Carlos Beltrán is going into Cooperstown with a Mets cap. Third guy ever to get that plaque treatment for this franchise, which is both awesome and slightly depressing when you remember the Mets are older than cable TV.
- Keith Hernandez is sticking with SNY, just with fewer games. He’s talking about cutting back to 91 games from 110, with a multi-year deal vibe. Good. The booth still needs an adult in the room.
- Bullpen watch: the kids are coming. MLB.com is flagging a real “young arms could matter early” situation with Díaz gone to the Dodgers, which means spring is going to be a cage match for leverage innings.
- Roster depth shopping continues. The Mets are one of the teams showing interest in Ty France, a very “solid glove, don’t ask him to carry your offense” kind of target.
- Reminder from the adults upstairs: Stearns has been pretty blunt that the rotation needs more, and he’s counting on bouncebacks plus young pitching to cover real innings. That’s code for “please, for the love of God, stay healthy.”
A Trip Around Major League Baseball
- Spring Training is staring everyone in the face. The Marlins’ first Grapefruit League game is Feb. 21 vs. the Mets in Port St. Lucie. Baseball is back, and so is everyone pretending their bullpen is fine.
- Braves injury punch: Ha-Seong Kim’s hand surgery has him out 4–5 months, which is a real problem when you planned on him being your Opening Day shortstop.
- MLBTR front-office heat meter: Carlos Mendoza is entering the final guaranteed year of his deal (with a club option beyond), which means the Mets’ 2026 expectations are loud and expensive.
NL East News & Notes

Braves
- Ha-Seong Kim out 4–5 months after hand surgery. Early-season infield stability just walked out the door.
Phillies
- Philly media is still hunting for an impact bat angle via trade, which tells you how confident they feel about the current mix.
Nationals
- FanGraphs’ offseason tracker has the latest transaction picture, which is useful since Washington’s direction keeps changing depending on who’s writing about them that day.
Marlins
- Spring schedule spotlight: first game is Feb. 21 vs. the Mets.
Mets History Today
- February 4, 1963: NYC Mayor Robert Wagner signed the bill that formally renamed the still-under-construction ballpark to William A. Shea Municipal Stadium. The House That Would Eventually Break Your Heart, now with a name.
Stats You Should Know
- Beltrán’s plaque decision is a legacy marker. MLB.com frames it simply: Seaver, Piazza, Beltrán. That’s the list.
- Ty France profile in one line: Gold Glove at 1B last year, light bat production (7 HR in 490 PA) but real defensive value. If the Mets sign him, it’s about run prevention and depth, not fireworks.
